A customer asked us to manufacture a large quantity of aluminum MMI Sonora disks for application in the medical industry. We have been providing this kind of large gear work for over 30 years, so we quickly ramped up our CNC machining capabilities and turned them to the task at hand. These precision CNC 6061-T6 aluminum parts were milled on our automated Toyoda horizontal machines, turned on our Doosan vertical machining centers, and then drilled before the teeth were formed on our Gleason, Mitsubishi, and Pfauter style gear hobbing equipment. Secondary processes used on these parts included deburring and finishing with the application of a clear chemical film per MIL-DTL-5541F, Type II, Class 1A standards, for corrosion protection. These large Aluminum Disks were 11.514” in diameter, 1.645” high, and machined to tight tolerances of + 0.0002” / - 0. We used visual and dimensional inspections during production of the disks, whose gear profiles were subsequently tested to AGMA Class 10 standards before certificates of compliance were issued. Working from our customer's specifications and 2D CAD drawings, we now produce 1,000 of these Aluminum Disks for our customer annually in only eight to ten weeks, which are then delivered to their location in Sunnyvale, CA.
